Well, it’s been a while, but we finally have another website up and running!

Maybe you once visited our last website, maybe not, but here we are again, finally!

Actually, we should be saying that we have a blog.

You may be aware of the large placer mining dredge sitting quietly off to the side like a sleeping giant as you arrive in Sumpter – how can you miss it right?

While it may be easy to see the Sumpter Valley Dredge – it may not be so easy to see a group of resident volunteers that are dedicated to restoring and preserving one of the largest historic icons in Eastern Oregon.

The Friends of The Dredge blog is dedicated to those who have come before us -

who serve presently -

and who will serve in the future.

What’s the difference between a website and a blog? It may not seem like much, but the difference is great. Several years ago, we decided that we would like to have a presence on the internet. But something was missing……and now that the blog format has arrived, we know what it was we were lacking with our previous website:

Interaction – Engagement

We want to hear from past dredge workers, their families, relatives, and even those of you who just have an interest in gold mining history. And of course, we always like hearing from our membership! We want to hear from you and we invite you to use this blog to stay in touch with us!

Don’t worry – we won’t stop using the postal service to stay in contact with those who would rather keep things simple. We will endeavor to send out at least four newsletters a year – one for each season. We will be developing an electronic email contact list for those who so desire to be a part of it. If you would like to have us deliver a newsletter to you via email, just send us your email address. We promise not to load your mail box with a lot of junk mail – and you’ve got our word that we will never, ever, give your email address to anyone!  If you would like to follow the Friends of The Dredge Blog, just use the handy follow button over there on the right side of the blog.

Starting next season, we will have a place on our guestbook where you can provide your email address and we will add you to our list so you can receive newsletters and be able to stay current with what’s happening at the dredge.

We would love to hear your stories.

If you’ve been to the dredge, for instance, we would be interested in knowing what brought you here, and if you haven’t been to Sumpter to visit the dredge, we would be interested to know what it would take to get you interested in visiting. We would also love to see photos some of you have taken of the dredge too! We would love to share your photos with everyone here if you would like too. If you have a relative in your family tree who once worked on the dredge, we would love to hear and share any favorite stories that they might have shared with the family.

You can reply to a post individually, or you can send us an email.

Our email address has not changed over the years.

Reaching out

We have been so busy pursuing grants and operating our Interpretive Gift Store that we often forget to reach out to our community!

We have been working quietly to raise funds for the continued restoration and preservation of the Sumpter Valley Dredge in partnership with Oregon State Parks since Friends of The Dredge was founded in 1992. If you live in the Sumpter area and (even if you don’t live in the area) and you would like to join the team in some way – send us an email!

If you would like to learn more about the Sumpter Valley Dredge, we encourage you to visit the Oregon State Parks website here.

You can visit us elsewhere on the internet too!

Please stick around and explore our new blog and let us know what you think!
